The story comes first

Stephen King has said in his inspiring book On Writing that the story comes first. Everything else is just bells and jingles.

That includes the writing style, the words choice and beauty of sentences. Yes, even those lines come second to story which can induce orgasms in readers.

I must etch that in my mind. The story always must come first. Yes, that way too.

If the story is good and the writing is meh, it can still work. But if the story is bad, the writing has to be exceptional for it to work.
