One way to build a strong fictional character

Each good story has a strong character in it. The characters usually drive the story. Rarely is a story concept great but the characters bland. The story can be shit but if the characters are strong, then you will find you enjoyed the story.

One way to build such strong characters, especially a protagonist (an antagonist too will work), is to make the character suffer.

That is the one commandment of good fictional writing. But writers, including me, forget that all the time.

I am in the process of drilling it down in my mind by practice and soon I will be able to churn out better stories.

Make the characters suffer and bring out the personalities in them. A good story seldom has a happy character for long. A great story, never.

The video that influenced the ideas in this post. Must watch
