Human apocalypse

If human population faces a catastrophe and most of the humans die, our civilization will collapse as we know it and we will have to start anew. All the progress made until now will be for nothing, and unless the human population bounces back while preserving knowledge religiously, we can bounce back in a few centuries.

But if the knowledge is lost and the human population is almost wiped out, it may set us back thousands of years. The surviving humans will be surrounded by modern human artefacts, so they will know what is possible. But even then it won’t be easy to get back to where we are right now. That might take thousands of years.

And if the human population goes extinct, it may take millions of years for another intelligence to evolve on the planet and take over as the dominant life form. It may seem unlikely but, given enough time, there will be another self-aware intelligent species on earth apart from humans. Intelligence has proven to be a great advantage in the battle for survival in the indifferent nature.

And we won’t be around to observe their elegance and beauty.
