Facing someone’s undue bad mood or anger
Let’s face it: humans are irrational. No getting around that.
When something upsets us, we tend to sulk around carrying that emotion on our shoulders. We then usually dump it on whoever is a convenient victim.
Many times I can be the culprit. That’s another article for another day.
Many times I will be the victim of someone’s bad mood or unwarranted anger. I then get upset with how that person treated me unfair for no apparent reason.
So how do I deal with this?
There are two solutions I can think of:
You can snap back at that person with your own version of rage and make the whole situation worse.
Or you can try looking at it from a different perspective instead of taking it personally. If it rains while you going about your day, do you curse the rain? (Yes? Well, stop reading this article. You seem to take everything personally. The whole foundation is wonky.)
No, right?
You realize that the rain is impersonal and the cause of it has nothing to do with your geographical position. It rains when the conditions for rain are met. It depends on humidity, wind speed, temperature and of course clouds. It does not depend on you. You don’t shake fists at the clouds and curse it with the worst expletives you know. You just wait for the rain to subside and go about your day.
Similarly, you can think about someone’s unwarranted anger or bad mood this way. It has nothing to do with you (Remember, we are not talking about the anger which may be caused by you). You just wait for the person to move on and away from your physical presence, or you do it, or you simply realize that something else has caused the anger or bad mood to surface in the person. You just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Imagine that angry person suffering from nasty constipation, have a laugh, and take nothing personally (of course, don’t snigger in front of that angry person).
This takes a lot of practice. But its worth doing for your own mental peace.
